ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - 1-2 CANTERBURY CLOSE

At 1 & 2 Canterbury Close we provide support to ten individuals with a learning disability who may also have physical disabilities, autism and challenging needs. The service is split between two separate bungalows and is located in Herringthorpe, three miles from Rotherham town centre, with shops and pubs within walking distance.

Many of the people living at the service cannot communicate verbally; however by working closely with their families and speech and language therapists we believe that we can develop a very good understanding of their preferences. We encourage everyone to maintain regular contact with family, friends and other people who are important to them, if they wish.

Each person is given a service user guide in photograph format. Everyone is encouraged to take part in appropriate daily living tasks and activities, such as domestic tasks, menu planning and shopping. Each individual has a key worker who will meet with them regularly to ensure that they are happy with the service, and to advocate for them.

The service has its own car, as well as a minibus with a tail lift for wheelchair access. We regularly organise day trips to different places, such as the coast, theatres, discos, animal farms and ten pin bowling alleys. Individuals are supported to take an annual holiday to a destination of their choice. 

All bedrooms have en-suite facilities and we encourage individuals to make decisions about how to decorate and personalise their own room. The service has a sensory room with a bubble tube, a mirror ball, fibre optic lights and a ball pool. Other in-house activities include board games, bingo, aromatherapy and barbecues. The grounds are open plan with fenced off garden and patio areas and feature a summer house and seating areas.

The service is fully wheelchair accessible and ceiling tracking and accessible baths and shower rooms are available, if needed.
