ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - OXFORDSHIRE SHARED LIVES SCHEME

Shared Lives is a unique, very flexible service helping people who need some care or support to live independently and to take part in family and community life of a Shared Lives carer.Shared Lives carers are individuals, couples and families who provide care in their own home. A Shared Lives carer and someone who needs support are matched by the scheme.  This can mean that the individual becomes a regular daytime or overnight visitor to the Shared Lives carer's household, or that the individual moves into the Shared Lives carer’s home. Shared Lives can also provide day support, respite care and home from hospital care. It can help people make the step to living on their own and where this happens provide ongoing support. Shared Lives carers give practical and emotional support, from meals and accommodation to helping people take part in community activities, build relationships and develop independent living skills. Shared Lives can support people with a range of needs, including disabled adults, older people, people with mental health problems, people with learning disabilities, care leavers, young people with disabilities becoming adults (transition) parents with a learning disability and their children, and  people with dementia.

Oxfordshire County Council's Shared Lives Scheme is registered for the regulated activity personal care. It currently provides support to just over 140 people and there are about 80 households approved with the scheme. Shared Lives carers share their family and community life with someone who needs support with care taking place within the carer's own home. People using the service were generally referred via the local authority. Self referrals and referrals from brokers are starting to take place. All Shared Lives workers in this scheme are qualified social workers.
