ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - WESTWOOD HOUSE

Westwood House, in Swindon, provides support for ten people who have learning disabilities and mental health issues and may show behaviours that challenge.

The service is a detached Victorian building surrounded by a well established large garden. It is located in the Old Town area of Swindon, close to local amenities and the countryside.

Within the service there are ten spacious bedrooms, a large kitchen, where several people can cook safely at one time, and two generously sized communal rooms, which are used for a range of activities, or simply relaxing. The service is brightly lit by natural light through the large Victorian windows, some of which are stained glass.

The people who live at Westwood House are very involved in the day to day running of the service, and deciding how their home looks. Individuals are involved in menu planning, grocery shopping, choosing activities that they wish to participate in and regular service users meetings. People who previously found decision making incredibly difficult are now able, with the right support and guidance, to have autonomy over how they wish to live their lives.

We support people to maintain contact with their families and friends and to spend quality time with people who are important to them.

The service caters for a wide range of ages, and activities reflect individual wishes and desires. These include accessing local colleges and day centres, horse riding, gym, music alive and dancing. People can also access clubs and social events in the evenings.

The service is particularly skilled in supporting people who have complex behavioural needs. The service has built networks with appropriate external agencies, such as psychiatric and behavioural therapists and medical professionals.
