ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - WEST BERKSHIRE ADULT PLACEMENT SCHEME

The West Berkshire Council Shared Lives Scheme recruits carers and families who can offer adults a home environment and a chance to regain skills and / or learn and maintain new skills that will enable them to live a more independent life with support from a carer. Shared Lives carers are self employed.

The scheme began in 1989 and has been running successfully ever since .Caring for someone can be very demanding and requires a special commitment. Even if you feel that you cannot provide this commitment, you could still help us by passing this information to others who you think might be interested.

Shared Lives aims to offer support to a variety of people with a differing range of needs and skills. It provides care and support to older people, people with mental health problems and adults with a physical or learning disability . The scheme aims to include those who access the service as members of the shared lives carer's families either on a full time placement basis or by offering overnight respite, short breaks or day support.

Shared Lives also offers a transitions service for young people aged 16 or over who are making the change from Children's based services to Adult based services. This ensures that appropriate support is given throughout the process.  Transitions also enables a  foster carer looking after children with a disability the ability to transfer to the Shared Lives Scheme and continue to care for an individual once they reach 18.

Further information is available in our public information leaflet which can be downloaded from the West Berkshire Council Shared Lives webpage.
