ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - SHARED LIVES SCHEME - SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL

Shared Lives is a unique, flexible service helping people who need care or support to live with and to take part in family and community life of a Shared Lives carer.

Shared Lives arrangements can only be accessed through a registered Shared Lives scheme and can support people with a range of needs, including disabled adults, older people, adults with mental health needs, adults with learning disabilities, care leavers, young adults with disabilities (transition) parents with a learning disability and their children, adults who have dementia and former offenders.

Shared Lives focuses on what each person wants and needs to live their life to the full. It enables people to take control, to experience family life with real relationships and to contribute to and be valued by their communities.

Shared Lives carers are individuals, couples and families who provide care in their own home. A Shared Lives carer and someone who needs support are matched by the Shared Lives Service. This can mean that the individual becomes a regular daytime or overnight visitor to the Shared Lives carer's household, or that the individual moves into the Shared Lives carer’s home. Shared Lives can also provide day support, respite care and home from hospital care. It can help people make the step to living on their own and where this happens provide ongoing support in much the same way as would happen in any family.

Shared Lives carers give practical and emotional support, from meals and accommodation to helping people take part in community activities, build relationships and develop independent living skills.
