ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - RICHMOND (MHA)

Midway between Eastbourne and Hastings in East Sussex lies Bexhill-on-Sea, where MHA's Richmond care home was opened in the early 1970s. The town has one of the finest stretches of sea shore on the South Coast and claims "to have retained all the best qualities of English life since the turn of the [19th] century whilst managing to avoid most of the unpleasant influences that have plagued so many other towns." Enjoying a blend of traditional and modern surroundings and amenities, it's little wonder that Dr Leslie Weatherhead, Methodist preacher and bestselling writer, thought Bexhill an ideal spot for an MHA home.

Dr Weatherhead was a former minister of the City Temple in London. Not only did he advocate looking for a site in Bexhill; in memory of his wife he also donated funds for the lift. Appropriately it was Dr Weatherhead who opened the home on 3 March 1971.

One of a growing number of purpose-built properties opened by MHA, Richmond was built on two floors at a cost of £165,000. Next door, MHA also built a block of retirement apartments for former members of staff. This was intended as a place of "enjoyable transition from busy, active service to taking up residence in one of the homes."

Early publicity photos emphasise the variety of communal facilities and the encouragement of social activities - including a residents' choir. Then as now, the intention was to create what residents have described as a "caring" environment. Richmond, extended and updated, is now offering dementia care for 26 residents in addition to 32 residential care places.
