ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - PORTSMOUTH SHARED LIVES SERVICE

Shared Lives is a unique, very flexible service helping people who need some care or support to live independently and to take part in family and community life of a Shared Lives carer.Shared Lives carers are individuals, couples and families who provide care in their own home. A Shared Lives carer and someone who needs support are matched by the service.  This can mean that the individual becomes a regular daytime or overnight visitor to the Shared Lives carer's household, or that the individual moves into the Shared Lives carer’s home. Shared Lives can also provide day support and short stays. It can help people make the step to living on their own. Shared Lives carers give practical and emotional support, from meals and accommodation to helping people take part in community activities, build relationships and develop independent living skills. Shared Lives can support people with a range of needs; older people, people with mental health problems, people with learning or physical disabilities, care leavers, young people with disabilities becoming adults (transition) and people with dementia.

Portsmouth City Council's Shared Lives Service is registered for the regulated activity personal care. It currently provides support to just over 50 people and there are about 42 households approved with the service. Shared Lives carers share their family and community life with someone who needs support, with care taking place within the carer's own home. People using the service are generally referred via the local authority.  All Shared Lives workers in this service have social work or relevant social care qualifications.
