ABOUT LOCAL CARE HOME - DERWENT COTTAGE

At Derwent Cottage we provide support to four people with a learning disability, autism, mental health needs and other complex needs.

Derwent Cottage is in the quiet village of Seamer, which forms part of the North Yorkshire coastal route and National Parks. The service is close to local facilities, parks, recreation areas and bus routes.

We treat each person as an individual with their own likes and dislikes. Staff have a good understanding of each person’s preferred communication methods, allowing everyone to have choice.

Everyone is encouraged to experience a range of activities and will be supported in doing this. College courses such as computers, arts and craft and music are available near by. We have a good relationship with the wider community, getting involved in fundraising and inviting local people to join us for events such as barbecues. We have good working relationships with other professionals. We encourage individuals to maintain contact with their families, where possible.

The service has four large bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities. The service is wheelchair accessible and all areas have been carefully designed to meet the needs of people with a range of disabilities and incorporate special features, such as height adjustable tables, specialist bathrooms and a sensory room. These facilities enable people to develop skills and build independence. Although the people we support have profound disabilities, we support each individual to be as independent as possible by completing tasks such making drinks and cleaning their room.

The service has a large garden with a lawn and raised flowerbeds. We have recently introduced chickens and rabbits to the garden and everyone can help care for the animals if they wish. There is also a sensory wall.
